October 13th Severe Weather Update

Saturday:

Recap of Last Night:  Multiple waves of showers moved across the Lawrence and surrounding area last night.  Thunder, brief heavy downpours and occasional lightning strikes were observed in Lawrence and the surrounding area.

Saturday Morning: Currently at the 10 am hour there is a line of storms that stretches from St. Joseph, MO to Independence, KS.  This line is currently marching across Lawrence and the surrounding area in the northeast direction at 40 mph.  This line of storms will likely not produce any severe activity for the Lawrence and surrounding areas.

Tonight:  The 6Weather team is still expecting a good chance for severe or semi-severe weather this evening.  It looks like the severe weather would come a little later than initially expected.  The strength of the storms tonight depend strongly on how much sunshine we get after the passage of the morning showers. If we get enough sunshine, it's likely the storms that are produced tonight along the approaching cold front will be somewhat strong. The primary threats for the storms tonight will likely be:

- Isolated pockets of golf-ball sized hail

- Isolated heavy thundershowers

- A slim chance for a few brief tornadoes

- Damaging wind gusts up to 50-60 mph in certain areas

If severe weather were to break out, you can count on the 6Weather team to give you live coverage with all the details.
