A local homeless woman is beaten outside the Lawrence Community Shelter. Police say the 52-year-old woman was asleep inside a van outside the shelter on Friday night. She awoke around 8:00 p.m. when a man was inside the van, beating her.

Rising gas prices have pushed a KU student service into debt, and some day its time for students to once again shoulder the load. Not everybody uses KU's bus service, but all students help pay for it through their campus fees. Now student senators are considering a fee increase to keep the wheels turning.
Because of extremely dry conditions, Douglas County is now under a burn ban until further notice.
The money isn't there. In January, Lawrence school officials agreed to put up $25,000 for a study aimed at assessing the need for - and figuring out how to pay for - a sports complex to offset the city ever-increasing demand for recreational facilities.

A convicted killer and the woman accused of helping him escape from Lansing correctional facility have been captured in Tennessee. Kansas correctional officials said 27-year-old John Manard and 48-year-old Toby Young were taken into custody at about 8:40 p.m. after a brief motor vehicle chase.
A local non-profit moves into a new home on west 31st St. Friday. Cottonwood doubles the size of their workspace as they celebrated the move into this million-dollar building. Cottonwood provides housing, jobs and support for 600 individuals with disabilities from Douglas and Jefferson Counties.

Senior night at Eudora the Cardinal boys challenge DeSoto, starting on top and remaining that way at the end of the game the Cardinals finish on top, 63-58. The lady Cardinals do just the same beating the Wildcats, 55-27.
Volunteer firefighters fought this afternoon to contain a large grass fire burning on the west side of Clinton Lake. Crews don't know what sparked the fire, which at one point was a mile and a half long and had burned more than 60 acres.

It was a big dig for Lawrence Habitat for Humanity Monday afternoon. A groundbreaking celebration was held today to kick off a new Habitat for Humanity neighborhood in north Lawrence. The "comfort neighborhood," named for longtime Habitat volunteer, Clay Comfort, will give 16 low-income families a chance to own their own home.
KU jumped into the polls for the first time this season last week at the 22nd slot in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. On Monday the Jayhawks (19-6, 10-2 Big 12) hopped up six spots to No. 16. Kansas, which was also ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Poll last week, moved to 18th in the Coaches Poll.
