Dr. John Hiebert, a Lawrence cardiologist, and Free State Brewery owner Chuck Magerl chatted online Thursday afternoon, answering readers questions about a smoking ban in Lawrence. Each chat lasted approximately 45 minutes. The submitted questions included those about personal freedoms, health risks, economic factors and more.

Second thoughts on smoking ban

One city commissioner may be having second thoughts about attempting to send the city-wide smoking ban to a public vote. Comissioner Boog Highberger says the meeting might have gone too fast. With a packed meeting, meaning the agenda and crowd, the issue may not have gotten the discussion it warranted. While the merits of the issue were discussed, the pros and cons were not. If the smoking ban does not go to a public vote, Highberger would reluctantly support the ordinance.

In a 3-2 vote, Lawrence City Commission decided Tuesday night to try to put a citywide smoking ban up for a citywide vote. The commission also voted 4-1 to approve a resolution condemning the Patriot Act.

Kansas Turnpike truck accident slows commuter traffic

Thousands of commuters using the Kansas Turnpike found themselves in a major traffic snarl this morning after a semi tractor-trailer overturned shortly before 5 a.m. just east of Lawrence. The truck's cab and its two grocery trailers blocked both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane for about two hours -- right in the middle of morning rush hour traffic between Lawrence and Kansas City.

KU women's team loses one of its best players

Tamara Ransburg, a talented shot blocker and rebounder whose college career was checkered by foul trouble, has left the Kansas University women's basketball team and will transfer to Old Dominion. Ransburg, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, averaged 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds a game during her two seasons with the Jayhawks. Thieves steal lethal drugs from veterinary clinic

Euthasol, one of several drugs which were stolen, is used to put animals to sleep. Vet clinics have been the targets of burglaries before. In the past, the buglars have been searching for ketamine, a date rape drug. Euthasol is chemically similar to the drugs used in lethal injections in humans. The doctors and police encourage the thieves to return or get rid of the drug before it is put to use.
