Gas prices are up, which means travel is down. AAA predicts travel over the Memorial Day weekend will be down for the first time in a decade. The three-day holiday weekend is the unofficial kickoff to the summer travel season. And as Janet Reid reports, in this slumping economy, local residents say they will have to dig deep to get away.

A Kansas University student charged in connection with the kidnapping and brutal attack of a 22-year-old Lawrence woman has been released from the Douglas County Jail. 22-year-old Matthew Jaeger walked out of the jail shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after posting an $850,000 bond.

Nancy Bingham is suing Boardwalk Apartments, the management company, the fire equipment safety contractors and several unnamed construction companies that performed renovations on the apartments leading up to the Oct. 7, 2005 fire. Her daughter, Nicole Bingham, was one of three people killed in the blaze.

They’ve gone from putting handcuffs on criminals to practicing handoffs with seventh-graders. “Remember, get in your three-point stance,” Lawrence Police Officer Eric Barkley shouted to a group of Southwest Junior High seventh-graders at a recent practice. “One guy is going to come at you. Fight him off.” Barkley is one of a number of city police officers who volunteer coaching seventh-grade football, a program the Lawrence Police Department has undertaken for the past 12 years.

Support continues to build at Lawrence City Hall for a new citywide sales tax. But the big question seems to be what a new sales tax should fund. City commissioner Mike Amyx previously proposed a half-cent sales tax to fund street, sidewalk and other infrastructure improvements.
