News Director

At what moment did you realize you wanted to become a journalist (videographer, meteorologist, sports reporter, etc.)? And if there wasn't a specific point in time, what was the motivating factor?
Through high school and college, I had aspirations of being a big time sports broadcaster, but the more local news reporting I did, the more I liked it. I really got a kick out of being the first person in Lawrence to tell the rest of the community an interesting story or big breaking news. As News Director, it's still a big motivating for our entire staff.
When you really want to relax and let your hair down in Lawrence, where do you go and what do you do?
I go to the softball diamonds, my basement for some ping pong or hang out with family -- including my two nieces.
What comes to your mind as the most memorable local story you've covered?
All the twists and turns with the South Lawrence Trafficway. Since my early reporting days at the local AM radio station, it's a story that has great community interest and brings out a lot of emotions on all sides of the issue. It's also one of the stories I feel I did my best reporting on.
If you couldn't be a reporter, what occupation would you want to try?
Professional baseball player. But, since most pro-teams wouldn't consider a 28 year old with no arm, speed or power a hot prospect, I'd probably focus my on attention writing.
If you were stranded on a deserted island with only one song to listen to and one book to read for the duration, what would they be?
Tough one. I guess I'd pick Echoes by Pink Floyd off the Meddle album. It's 23 and a half minutes long -- and brings back great memories from college. Do old scripts from Gilligan's Island count as books? I bet I could comb through those and find dozens of ways to almost get off that island.
If they were going to execute you tomorrow, rightly or wrongly, what would your last meal consist of?
Pizza.
