LAWRENCE - At a press conference at Allen Fieldhouse on Monday afternoon, Thomas Robinson announced his eligibility for the 2012 draft.

Robinson made the announcement with head coach Bill Self and sister Jayla by his side. Robinson cited the need to take care of his family as reason for the announcement. "I've known this was going to happen since last summer," says Head Coach Bill Self. "Even if he would, after careful deliberation and everything, said 'Coach, I want to come back,' I would strongly encourage him not to."

Coach Self was nothing but encouraging during the announcement. "He's a guy that is probably as loved as anybody who's played here in a long time. The entire Jayhawk nation should see this as a great day for everybody," says Self. "Everybody who supports Kansas looks at Thomas as their very own, because they've watched him grow right before their very eyes.

Robinson also noted that Monday was Jayla's birthday. "She'll be able to remember this one good," Robinson said.

We will have more tonight on 6News at 6:00 and 10:00.
