Derby High School head football coach Brandon Clark said he was heartbroken to learn that his former player, 18-year-old Colby Liston, was seriously injured in a car accident.

Authorities say the KU freshman was one of several people walking to get into a 1999 Ford Explorer that had stopped in the right traffic lane in the 1600 block of  Tennessee Street. Liston had just reached the rear of the vehicle when police say a 2005 Ford Explorer, being driven by 21-year-old KU student Julian Kuszmaul, rear- ended the other Explorer

Liston's family told the Derby Informer that the accident nearly severed both of Colby's legs, and he had to have a double amputation below the knee.
