Out of state escaped prisoner captured in Lawrence

Hours ago, the Lawrence Police Department caught an escaped prisoner just off KU's campus.

The wanted man got loose from a private transport vehicle yesterday evening.

Officers pummeled Deon Gregory Routt to the ground at 3:15 this afternoon, right in front of Memorial Stadium, off the corner of 11th and Mississippi.

Not even 24 hours since Routt was reported missing, the Lawrence Police Department caught the runaway prisoner.

Monday, Routt was being transported from Virginia to Colorado Springs, Colorado with other prisoners.

At about 5:30 last night, the private security vehicle stopped in Lawrence near 23rd and Louisiana to check on a prisoner, when Routt escaped.

Today, KU student Bobby Sight and his friends watched his capture unveil before him in a matter of minutes.

Ryan Carlino thought Routt was a fellow student when he walked by, because he had an orange backpack on.

Moments later, the Lawrence Police Department and KU Public Safety officials swarmed the area.

Witnesses said the event will remind them to remain watchful, no matter how safe the school's campus feels.

Routt has a warrant out for his arrest in Colorado, for sexual assault on a child.
