Lawrence is joining many other cities in Kansas with banning the use of aerial luminaries, or sky lanterns.
The Lawrence Fire and Medical Department says banning the lanterns is a precautionary procedure.
The lanterns are popular in other countries and interest is starting to grow in the U-S.
They are similar to a small hot air balloon and become airborne from a small candle or waxy, flammable material.
The Fire Chief said they are hazardous.
The Fire Chief said the lanterns could cause serious damage if they were to make contact with trees or homes.
He also said that there are several people trying to gain support for a state-wide ban.
