Lawrence man donates casino winnings

LAWRENCE - Brady Crist is not a gambler, so when he walked into the Argosy casino last weekend, he wasn't expecting much. Little did he know that Lady Luck was right by his side. "The lights started going off and we didn't have any idea what was going on," says Crist. "We actually got one of the people that worked there and were were like 'What do we do?' and he was like 'It looks like you just hit the Jackpot.'"

Crist wisely decided to walk away with his $1,000 jackpot intact, but he says he didn't feel like he deserved it. So on the way back to Lawrence, he thought about what to do with the money. "I actually used to volunteer at the Humane Society, so that was the first thought that came to my mind," says Crist.

On Friday, he met shelter director Dori Villalon, who heaped praises on the KU grad student for his generosity. Villalon says every donation matters, but in her more than 20 years of experience in animal welfare, she's never seen anything like this. "It's really the gesture that's really so heartwarming," says Villalon. "It is just so inspiring when our community shows that they believe in us and want to help us."

Crist says knowing his money will go to a good cause is the second jackpot he's hit this week.
