Lawrence City Commission to decide next step for Varsity House

By Liz Zamora on October 23, 2012

A historic Lawrence property that has created controversy is back before the City Commission.

The plan was to preserve the building while putting up new apartments on the same site.

Varsity house was built in the 1950s and used to house KU football players.

But the house had to be moved which meant that Varsity House had to be dismantled.

Now some worry that the integrity of the building has been compromised and that very little of the house is being saved.

City Commissioners will determine if the conditions to preserve the building are being met.

One City Commissioner is disappointed in the process.

“I was taken aback as many people were, that it had been disassembled and there is so much new material that's being used on the house. To be honest, I question whether it's the same building that came down,” Lawrence City Commissioner Mike Amyx said.

We'll bring you the City Commission's decision tonight on 6News at 10 and let you what the next step is for Varsity House.
