Friends of KU grad student found dead raise funds for his family

Friends of the late University of Kansas graduate student Gianfranco Villagomez have started a fundraiser on PayPal to help his family with unexpected expenses.

The group is hoping to raise $14,000 to pay for airfare for his family in Peru, funeral costs and shipping to send his belongings back home.

Villagomez went missing on Saturday, his body was found Monday. The 23-year-old had been missing since early Saturday morning. He was last seen walking from a home near 9th and Michigan Streets to his girlfriend's house near 11th and Mississippi Streets. Villagomez was reported missing by friends around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Villagomez's body was found Monday afternoon in the 800 block of Avalon Road.
A vigil and service will be held Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1229 Vermont Street, in Lawrence. The vigil is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m.
