A child sex offender who escaped from Lansing Correctional Facility has been returned to custody, Kansas prison officials said Wednesday.

Gary Furthmyer was taken into custody at about 2 p.m. today in Kansas City, Kan. Information about his capture was not immediately available.

Furthmyer, 59, escaped three weeks ago from a minimum custody job assignment at the prison steam plant. He was serving a six to 25 year sentence for 1985 convictions in Sedgwick County, for indecent liberties with a child and aggravated failure to appear.
