President Bush on Thursday recognized Ashley Knight, 25, a Lawrence native and a senior at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, for her community service efforts.
Knight received the Volunteer Service Award during a ceremony at New Century Airport in Gardner. Knight is a volunteer with Students Take Action, a program started by dental students to promote community service. Knight organizes and recruits volunteers to perform screenings and dental care at the Kansas City Free Health Clinic and Olathe Clinic.
She also organized Shear Madness, an annual STA fundraiser to send children with cancer to Camp Quality summer camp at no charge. Through the program, dental students, faculty and staff raised funds by accepting bids to cut their hair or shave their heads. This year, the program collected $11,000, and Knight donated 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love.
Bush has met with more than 600 volunteers across the U.S. since March 2002 to promote community volunteerism.
Bush stopped at the airport on his way to a Republican fundraiser in Bucyrus.
