Sebelius calls on feds to step up development of wind energy

Monday, June 2, 2008

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius on Monday called on Congress and President Bush to make renewable energy a top priority.

Speaking at the American Wind Energy Association's conference in Houston, Sebelius said, "While states have made great strides, we need clear leadership at the federal level with a commitment to stepping up our development of our alternative energy resources."

She said the federal government should accelerate wind power goals, and renew tax credits for renewable energy to decrease climate-changing carbon dioxide emissions.

"To reduce pollution and increase wind energy, we need clear federal rules about the cost of CO2," she said.

Sebelius said Kansas was trying to maximize its wind potential, but added, "Creating a patchwork of regulatory interventions on a state-by-state basis is not a good approach to the national challenge of reducing green house gas emissions."
