Topeka — The Kansas House adjourned this evening without trying to override Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ veto of a bill that would authorize the construction of two coal-fired electric power plants.
House leaders said they would attempt an override vote Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the Senate voted 32-7, which was more than the two-thirds majority needed in that chamber to override Sebelius’ veto.
Sebelius has vetoed two bills that would authorize construction of two 700-megawatt plants in southwest Kansas.
She has cited concerns about carbon dioxide emissions, escalating costs of coal-fired plants, and the fact that most of the power would be sold to out of state customers.
On Wednesday, Sunflower Electric Power Corp., which has proposed the project, was pushing for a companion bill that would double the energy available from the project for Kansas, from 200 megawatts to 400 megawatts. The new measure would also charge every ratepayer in Kansas two cents per month per electric meter.
Those funds would go to help develop Sunflower Electric’s bioscience energy center and weatherization programs. House leaders said they would vote on that bill and to override on Thursday.
