Principal Ed West on nomination as FSHS's new principal

Ed West, principal at Jefferson West High School in Meriden, this morning was named the new Free State High School principal.

The Lawrence school board must give final approval to West’s selection, which was announced by Superintendent Randy Weseman. West will replace Joe Snyder, Free State’s first and only principal, who announced his retirement in February. Snyder will serve through the end of this school year.

“Ed is a student-focused administrator with high expectations for himself, his staff and students,” Weseman said. “He recognizes Free State High School’s reputation for excellence and wants to be a part of taking that school to even greater heights.”

West is in fourth year as Jefferson West’s principal. He has also served as the St. Marys High School principal from 1999 to 2004 and Hutchinson High School’s assistant principal from 1996 to 1999. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University and is pursuing a doctorate in education from Kansas State University.

“The accomplishments enjoyed by Free State are a testimony to the staff's ability to motivate and educate students,” West said in a statement. “Likewise, I found the students and parents to be appreciative of and responsive to the challenges set before them. Without a doubt, the educational system in Lawrence consists of a cohesive learning community; becoming a part of such a system is a true honor.”

School administrators accepted 14 applications at the end of March, and advisory committees of teachers, parents and students interviewed finalists last week. The school board will consider West’s appointment at its meeting next Monday.

This is Snyder’s 12th year as Free State’s principal. He spent a full year planning the school’s opening, which was Aug. 21, 1997.
