Kansas Supreme Court blocks grand jury probe of Tiller

Friday, October 26, 2007

— The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday temporarily halted a grand jury investigation into Wichita abortion provider Dr. George Tiller until it could sort out legal issues in the case.

Anti-abortion groups forced the seating of a grand jury in Sedgwick County to investigate Tiller and his Wichita clinic. The groups accuse Tiller of performing illegal late-term abortions.

Tiller has denied any wrongdoing.

The grand jury was scheduled to convene Tuesday.

The state Supreme Court issued an order that stops the grand jury proceeding until the court can decide if the process is proper.

Tiller’s attorney Lee Thompson filed a petition last week with the court asking it to block the grand jury probe, saying the proceeding amounted to harassment.
