A hazardous materials crew from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical has been dispatched to Kansas University campus — but the incident turned out to be a misunderstanding.

There were reports that a package emitting gases and whistles had been delivered to Malott Hall. Authorities said at 9:20 a.m. it turned out that KU custodial crews were transferring a box when they accidentally hit an air valve in the building; they mistakenly believed the resulting release of air came from the box.

At least one floor of the building was evacuated while authorities responded to the incident.
