Stalled moving van clogs US 24 traffic

The congestion on the highway between Lawrence and Perry is a concern to drivers

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

— A large moving van blocked both lanes of U.S. Highway 24 east of Perry and backing up traffic for more than an hour this morning in Jefferson County after its driver attempted to make an illegal U-turn, a Kansas Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

The bottom of the vehicle dragged against the pavement while the driver tried to make the maneuver about 9:15 a.m. near a curve east of Williamstown, said technical trooper Edna Buttler, a highway patrol spokeswoman.

Two Lawrence towing companies were on the scene with troopers to try to clear the vehicle from the road, she said. The vehicle was removed around 10:30 a.m., as traffic was still backed up for about a half-mile each direction, witnesses said.

“Our first priority is clearing the roadway obviously,” Buttler said.

The congestion on the highway between Lawrence and Perry is a concern to drivers after the Kansas River bridge near Lecompton closed Monday for repairs. The bridge was along the only direct route between Lecompton and Perry, which are in the same school district.
