The Mass. Street Deli, a dining fixture in downtown Lawrence for 34 years, closed today and will not reopen, its owner said.
The building at 941 Mass. is being sold.
Bob Schumm, who opened the place in 1973, said that intense competition and dwindling retail sales citywide had convinced him that it was time to close the business and sell the property.
The deli had 30 employees, some of which will be transferring to Schumm’s other downtown restaurant, Buffalo Bob’s Smokehouse, which remains open.
Schumm declined to identify the buyer of his building at 941 Mass., but said that it would be a restaurant.
