Welcome to Art a la Carte. I'm Journal-World arts editor Mindie Paget.
The kooky thespians at E.M.U. Theatre have cooked up a collaborative script that adopts themes from the Frankenstein legend. They're touting it as a "miracle of modern theatrical science." "Damn the Maker: Trials of a Man Made Man" rises from the slab at 8 p.m. today and 7 and 10 p.m. Saturday in the basement performing arts classroom at the Lawrence Arts Center.
Also at the arts center, City Youth Theatre presents its annual Cabaret Showcase this weekend. The musical revue, dubbed "No Pain, No Gain," features young area actors in grades 9 through 12. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday in the main theater.
And at the Spencer Museum of Art, a traveling exhibition takes an in-depth look at artwork portraying Amadou Bamba, a mystic sheik who died in 1927 but remains at the center of a particular movement of Islam in the African country of Senegal. "A Saint in the City" opened Thursday and remains on view through May 20.
