Louis G. Galloway, 44, is charged with breaking down the door to the New York Street apartment of Michael S. Miller, 38, and attacking the man twice and injuring him, causing broken ribs and other injuries. The trial was originally scheduled to start Dec. 20, but it was postponed after Miller was shot six times in Ottawa and had to be hospitalized. Prosecutors have alleged that Miller’s shooting was a plot to keep Galloway’s case from moving forward.

The Kansas House on Wednesday rejected an attempt to increase the state minimum wage, which at $2.65 per hour is the lowest in the nation. Federal officials who control Kansas dams said Wednesday that controversial releases from the reservoirs, including Lake Perry, will likely continue this year. “We are still losing water on account of the drought,” John Paul Woodley Jr., assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, told state lawmakers. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development handed out nearly $1.4 billion dollars in grants today, including nearly $49,000 to the Salvation Army in Lawrence. The grants are part of about $7.4 million in grants given to agencies in Kansas. The Salvation Army in Lawrence received a virtually identical grant in 2005, which provided money to help find housing and jobs for the homeless.
