Louis G. Galloway, 44, is charged with breaking down the door to the New York Street apartment of Michael S. Miller, 38, and attacking the man twice and injuring him, causing broken ribs and other injuries. The trial was originally scheduled to start Dec. 20, but it was postponed after Miller was shot six times in Ottawa and had to be hospitalized. Prosecutors have alleged that Miller’s shooting was a plot to keep Galloway’s case from moving forward.

Lawmakers protest releases from reservoirs

But feds say the practice is necessary, will continue

Federal officials who control Kansas dams said Wednesday that controversial releases from the reservoirs, including Lake Perry, will likely continue this year. “We are still losing water on account of the drought,” John Paul Woodley Jr., assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, told state lawmakers. Under the Army Corps of Engineers control manual, that means water will have to be released from some Kansas reservoirs to support navigation along the Missouri River.

The Salvation Army in Lawrence received a virtually identical grant in 2005, which provided money to help find housing and jobs for the homeless.

House passes 'official English' bill

The Kansas House on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to a bill making English the official language of Kansas, after the measure was amended to include a possible $500,000 to help fund English classes for adult immigrants. Melinda Lewis, an immigrant advocate, opposed the original `official language’ bill, but said the inclusion of funds to help people learn English would make the legislation better.
