Progress at the 1205 N.J. fire site

Family members summoned at 5 a.m.

Monday, September 18, 2006

Firefighters apparently made grim progress early this morning in their search for more victims of a Sunday fire known to have killed at least two people.

Family members of the fire victims were summoned around 5 a.m. to the site at 1205 N.J., where they watched as firefighters loaded the back of a black SUV — which immediately departed the scene.

Other firefighters surrounded the vehicle and family with a blue tarp, in an apparent attempt to obstruct the view of media on hand; no official was immediately available to confirm that a body had been found.

Three children were known to be missing following the fire that destroyed the home after midnight on Sunday. Two people were confirmed dead Sunday: Charles Glover Sr., 66, and Mariyana Johnson, 13 months.

After the SUV and family members left, firefighters went back to work in the rear of house, passing charred timbers and other debris as they excavated deeper into the northwest corner of the house in an attempt to seek both victims and a cause of the fire.

Fire officials plan a news conference at 1 p.m.

This story will be updated throughout the day.
