Welcome to Art a la Carte. I'm Journal-World arts editor Mindie Paget.
Some things old and some things new are on the program of the University Dance Company's fall concert this evening. Featured will be a contemporary ballet by guest artist and former Joffrey principal Carl Corry, and two major revivals by Muriel Cohan and Patrick Suzeau. Also on the bill are new works by KU faculty. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center.
And it's opening night for two local theater companies. Haskell Indian Nations University students will take the stage for a Thunderbird Theatre production of "Girl Who Loved Her Horses." The show takes its name from the lead character, who has the mysterious power to draw the horse "every human being on the planet wanted but could never have." Performances are at 8 p.m. today and Saturday at the Lawrence Arts Center.
And the strange, magical characters from Dr. Seuss books will come to life onstage when Lawrence Community Theatre opens "Seussical the Musical" this evening. The show blends elements of Seuss's best-loved works into a rhyming musical story. Curtain is at 8 p.m. today, with shows continuing for four weekends.
