More than 200 grandparents went back to school Friday. Prairie Park Elementary School's grandparent’s day gave generations of students and adults a chance to interact. With assignments to compare and contrast activities to see how the time have changed, to grandparent packets and books made by the students, the day was full of anything but a quiet classroom.

A mother charged with endangering her infant child, who allegedly died as the result of child abuse by the mother's boyfriend, made a brief court appearance Friday to schedule a plea. Twenty-four-year-old Brandi Hendrickson appeared in District Court before Judge Paula Martin, where Hendrickson waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

A Lawrence man receives nearly five years in prison for a shooting last year at a South Lawrence apartment complex. District Court Judge Stephen Six sentenced 45-year-old Keith Mann to 57 months in prison for aggravated battery for the February 2005 shooting in the 1800 block of west 26th Street.

Cast, crew and the general public packed into Liberty Hall to celebrate the local opening of "CSA, The Confederate States of America." In the history of the Big 12 Conference there have been nine championship tournaments. In those nine tournaments the Kansas Basketball team is a perfect 9-0 in its first round games. They Jayhawks enjoyed a bye Friday in round one, while the Cowboys had to beat Iowa State to advance to Saturday evenings quarters.

Two teachers in Lawrence get to go to the head of the class. Lawrence public school officials today announced they have named Debby Cummings, a Schwegler fifth-grade teacher, as 2006 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Jane Rock, a family and consumer science teacher and department chairperson at Free State High School, has been named the school district’s 2006 Secondary Teacher of the Year.

One man is dead and another behind bars after a shooting early Saturday morning in Baldwin City. Local police arrived at the one hundred block of Hillcrest Lane around 2:15 a.m. According to Baldwin City Police Chief Mike McKenna, the homeowners were hosting a small birthday party when a fight broke out between two men.

Eight members of Stull United Methodist Church sewed away on Saturday with the ope of completing 25 handcrafted quilts. This is the second year the church made the lap sized blankets as a way to share Christian love. The blankets will be given the the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association.

Police have arrested a man in Oklahoma today who is believed to have shot and killed another man at a house party early this morning in Baldwin. The suspect, described earlier as a 5-foot-6 Hispanic man, was arrested about 11 a.m. this morning after he borrowed a car and fled south following the shooting, police said.

City leaders are dropping the idea of Eagle Bend Golf Course paying its own way. Financial reports from 2005 show the city run course near Clinton Lake lost more than $50 thousand. Since opening in 1998, Eagle Bend has only had two money making years.

It was an emotional day in Douglas County District Court as a Lawrence man is sentenced for killing his girlfriend's three-month-old daughter. Twenty three-year-old Jason Dillon will spend the next 16 years in prison for the Murder of Sydni Perkins. The toddler died in June after spending a day in Dillons care.

Following the men's basketball game Wednesday night, after 60 years of calling men's basketball games, Max Falkenstien called his last in the Phog on Wednesday. Before the season Max decided this would be his last year behind the mic. To honor him, the University unveiled a commemorative retired number 60 jersey in the South end of the Fieldhouse.

The Tongie girls were out in Sumner taking on the Lady Braves of Bonner Springs. Tongie battles losing the lead in the beginning, but comes back in the end taking home the win, 36-32. The girls will play in the sub-state finals on Saturday.

Playoff basketball started for the 6A boys. The four seeded Lawrence Lions had Olathe North in the jungle. Lions have lost five of their last six, but that one win was over the North Eagles, so why not make it two straight over North. The Lions did just that defeating the Eagles, 58-54.

Could the Firebirds move on? They took their six seed to Topeka High Thursday night to face the Topeka Trojans. Looking good throughout the game, the Firebirds fall just short of a win, losing to the Trojans, 57-61.

It was a fitting way to send out the seniors and Max. Wednesday night Kansas roughed up Colorado 75-54 at Allen Fieldhouse. Four Jayhawks scored in double figures, led by Mario Chalmers 14. All three of KU's seniors put points on the board. The Jayhawks are now in a first place tie again with UT for the Big 12 title.

It was an evening of farewells tonight at Allen Fieldhouse. Senior Christian Moody, Stephen Vinson, Jeff Hawkins and Moulaye Niang stepped into the Phog for the final time. And then there was Max Falkenstien who called his final home broadcast for the Jayhawks after 60 seasons at the mic. In the midst of all the good-byes, a basketball game broke out.

An air ambulance was put on standby after a man was shot in northwestern Douglas County this afternoon. Medical responders arrived at 435 N 2190 Road around 2:30 p.m. today, finding a man who had been shot with a .32 caliber handgun.

A law allowing some undocumented immigrants to pay resident tuition would be repealed under a bill recommended today by a House committee. The 12-8 vote for a bill to repeal the 2004 law represented a dramatic turnaround from last week when the committee defeated the measure on an 11-11 tie vote.
