To the editor:
Sunday, June 25, around 10:15 a.m., as I entered Douglas County l057 or l900 Road from my driveway on the side of a hill, I looked to my right and there were 20-25 bicyclists in a group riding tight together coming up the hill. I was able to enter the road ahead of them but within the next mile, another group of the same number was riding that I had to follow up the hill at 3 to 4 mph.
While we want to share the road with bicyclists and have them enjoy a country outing and the beautiful scenery, they should practice safety and be courteous to motorists and not make them travel at bicycle speed. The country roads were built just wide enough for cars and trucks and not groupings of bicycles.
I have some suggestions that would help both bicyclists and motorists be courteous and safe:
Bicycle clubs when riding on two-lane roads should have no more than l0 bicycles per mile and only two side by side where there are white markings down the center. When cars approach from the rear, go to single file on the white line on the side of the road. Where there are yellow lines in the center go to single file and when motor vehicles approach from the rear go to the white line on the side of the road.
Bicyclists and motorists, be courteous, be safe!
