Grab a cold drink this afternoon — and don't forget the ice.

"The temperature is very hot today," said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. "We'll soar up to 97 degrees."

Skies are expected to become partly cloudy this afternoon, with a chance for a thunderstorm, Schack said.

Winds will be from the southwest at 8 to 15 mph, she said.

At 7:40 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport's temperature was 64 degrees, the humidity was 70 percent and winds were out of the east at 6 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 68 degrees. The record low was 51 degrees, set in 1923.

The average high temperature for this date is 88 degrees. The record high was 107 degrees, set in 1934.

More hot weather is on the way for the end of the week, Schack said.

Friday's morning low will start at 68 degrees, climbing to a high of 98 degrees, with mostly sunny skies.

Saturday's morning low will be 69 degrees, with the afternoon high reaching 96 with partly cloudy skies.
