In a close vote, Lawrence city commissioners approved Tuesday night a plan to move cases of marijuana possession into municipal court and punish offenders with a $200 minimum fine. The new city law will take effect in the next few months.

Rising gas prices have pushed a KU student service into debt, and some day its time for students to once again shoulder the load. Not everybody uses KU's bus service, but all students help pay for it through their campus fees. Now student senators are considering a fee increase to keep the wheels turning.

A $90 thousand State Heritage Trust Grant is being sought by Douglas County to help pay for major repairs to the 103-year-old courthouse. To get the grant the county must be willing to put up $22 thousand of its own money for the project.

A local pizza delivery driver is robbed at gunpoint. The 20-year-old Dominos driver was attempting to deliver three pizzas to an apartment at the Trailridge complex, when he was approached by the suspect just before 1:00 a.m. Monday morning.

Homeless woman beat outside community shelter

A local homeless woman is beaten outside the Lawrence Community Shelter. Police say the 52-year-old woman was asleep inside a van outside the shelter on Friday night. She awoke around 8:00 p.m. when a man was inside the van, beating her.

Move ahead 13 months to Saturday night, a seventh ranked Texas team dominated a 16th ranked team also to the tune of 25 points.

A convicted killer and the woman accused of helping him escape from Lansing correctional facility have been captured in Tennessee. Kansas correctional officials said 27-year-old John Manard and 48-year-old Toby Young were taken into custody at about 8:40 p.m. after a brief motor vehicle chase.

It's too good to be true, Lawrence police are warning area residents about bogus coupons circulating around town. Manufacturers coupons for products like Pepsi and Advil are being sent by e-mail. The problem is the barcode on the coupon actually works, but police say if you use them you are breaking the law.

A 29-year-old Lawrence man is arrested and is accused of knowingly exposing a woman to a life threatening disease. The suspect was booked into jail Thursday evening with a warrant charging him with an HIV crime.

A Topeka man arrested in connection with a fatal shooting outside the Granada Theatre in downtown Lawrence now faces a charge of premeditated first degree murder. Eighteen-year-old Topeka resident, Rashawn Anderson, made his first appearance in Douglas County district court Thursday afternoon.

New fire stations leave history behind

Two new fire stations should open this year leaving a pair of Lawrence's historic buildings empty. Firefighters will leave the Grover Barn station this summer and move into a new facility on Wakarusa Road. Built in 1858, slaves stayed here as part of the underground railroad.

Detectives with Douglas County Sheriff's department are investigating the death of an 85 year-old woman, found in her home by a relative inside her home. Deputies were called to the house just east of 31st and Lawrence Ave., around 11 a.m. after initial reports of a drowning.
