In a close vote, Lawrence city commissioners approved Tuesday night a plan to move cases of marijuana possession into municipal court and punish offenders with a $200 minimum fine. The new city law will take effect in the next few months.

A local pizza delivery driver is robbed at gunpoint. The 20-year-old Dominos driver was attempting to deliver three pizzas to an apartment at the Trailridge complex, when he was approached by the suspect just before 1:00 a.m. Monday morning.

A local homeless woman is beaten outside the Lawrence Community Shelter. Police say the 52-year-old woman was asleep inside a van outside the shelter on Friday night. She awoke around 8:00 p.m. when a man was inside the van, beating her.

With just two games left in the regular season, the Jayhawks sit at 11-3 in conference, a full game back of the longhorns in the title ranks. The Jayhawks took a Texas sized beating last night against the longhorns. It seemed like a complete role reversal since last season. A year ago in Lawrence the sixth ranked KU squad smoked the 13th ranked Texas Longhorns by 25 points. Move ahead 13 months to Saturday night, a seventh ranked Texas team dominated a 16th ranked team also to the tune of 25 points.

A convicted killer and the woman accused of helping him escape from Lansing correctional facility have been captured in Tennessee. Kansas correctional officials said 27-year-old John Manard and 48-year-old Toby Young were taken into custody at about 8:40 p.m. after a brief motor vehicle chase.

Texas has won nine of its 10 overall, but the last two have been very shaky at best. Oklahoma State pounded the horns last Sunday and last night Texas held on against K-State in Manhattan by one. Post-season play began for Bishop Seabury Academy. Both the boys and girls earned the right to host the first round of regionals in their home gym Monday night. The third seeded boys lost the battle to the Burlingame Bearcats, 45-56. The fourth seeded ladies also challenged Burlingame winning, 33-28. They will advance to play on Friday.

The Lawrence High boy's basketball team is coming off a 22-point defeat to second ranked Leavenworth on Friday. The loss dropped LHS to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in the Sunflower league, but thanks for their 44 percent shooting from behind the arc the Lions are still in the hunt.

They put fires out and save people from buildings, now Lawrence firefighters can add resuscitating animals to that list. Local Veterinary Doctor James Kraft recently donated these oxygen masks for dogs and cats to the Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical Department.

The cost to rent a building at the Douglas County fairgrounds is heading up. Rates for building 21 will double from 40 to 80 dollars for a 6-hour rental. The arena will be a flat rate of 350 dollars on weekdays and 400 dollars per day on weekends.

Sunday night we introduced you to Debbi Rodak, a woman who went from a size 28 to a size in a matter of months. The change was possible thanks to a procedure called gastric bypass, but as she dropped over 100 pounds another problem developed. That's when she turned to local plastic surgeon, Dr. John Keller.

A multi-million dollar proposal could bring more space for recreation. A plan to improve and expand Lawrence's parks will come before City Commissioners Tuesday night. Lawrence parks officials will ask the city to issue 2.4 mission dollars in bonds to repair existing facilities and start work on new projects.

KU jumped into the polls for the first time this season last week at the 22nd slot in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. On Monday the Jayhawks (19-6, 10-2 Big 12) hopped up six spots to No. 16. Kansas, which was also ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Poll last week, moved to 18th in the Coaches Poll. Texas -- which lost 81-60 at Oklahoma State on Sunday, and who KU will face on Saturday -- dropped one spot to seventh, in both polls.

Earlier this week KU women's basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson kicked her team to the curb so to speak, by not letting her team use the locker room or wear anything that symbolized KU. The Lions struggle with just that, finishing below the Pioneers, 65-87. A man who burglarized local churches twice in the past four year is sent to prison Thursday. Judge Paula Martin ordered Richard Bowman to serve six years for crimes including a 2002 burglary at Corpus Christi Catholic Church and a September 2005 burglary at Saint John's Catholic Church.

Detectives with Douglas County Sheriff's department are investigating the death of an 85 year-old woman, found in her home by a relative inside her home. Deputies were called to the house just east of 31st and Lawrence Ave., around 11 a.m. after initial reports of a drowning.

A long-standing tradition in basketball comes to an end Thursday night for one local junior high school. After more than 80 years on the court, the Central Junior High School Mustangs play their last game in this gymnasium. The gym will be shut down as officials begin preparing for renovations that will be made to the school next month.

The driver who struck and killed 6 year-old Bryce Olsen as the kindergartener was riding his scooter to school will not face criminal charges. Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announced the decision Thursday after reviewing the police department's investigation into the January 30, accident.

Eudora high school students rally in support of their teachers Thursday evening. At a meeting of the Eudora school board more than two dozen students showed up to try to persuade board members to give their teachers a raise. Students gathered more than two hundred signatures on a petition, which they presented to the board.

She served as a senator for Illinois for six years before losing her seat.
