Two two-car accidents at same intersection

At least two people sent to hospital

Saturday, December 16, 2006

Two apparently separate but simultaneous accidents at the same Lawrence intersection sent at least two people to the hospital early Saturday — including one by helicopter ambulance.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Richard Nickell said officers were still gathering details on the two two-car accidents, which occurred shortly after midnight at 23rd and Harper streets.

One car had to be cut open by firefighters in order to extract a victim.

Brittany Stillian, 17, Eudora, said she was a driver in the second accident — waiting to turn left in the westbound lane of 23rd Street when it happened.

“I didn’t see the first one,” she said. “Completely unrelated — nothing to do with the first one.”

Nickell said more details would be available at a later hour.
