Get ready for a lot of rain — Douglas County has been placed under a flood watch through 7 a.m. Saturday, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.
As of 11:37 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport had received 0.34 of an inch of rain since showers started this morning, Schack said. Lawrence will get as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain today, then another 1 to 2 inches of rain overnight, she said.
"That will give us as much as 3 to 4 inches by Saturday afternoon," Schack said.
Drivers should use caution during the heavy downpours and stay out of areas where water has pooled onto streets, she said.
"Never drive through flooded roadways. Two feet of water can carry a car away," she said.
At 11:50 a.m., the city's temperature was 55 degrees, the humidity was 90 percent and winds were from the east at 13 mph.
The average low temperature for this date is 50 degrees. The record low was 34 degrees, set in 1955.
The average high temperature for this date is 71 degrees. The record high was 90 degrees, set in 1970.
Schack said today's temperature will reach a high of 61 degrees by late afternoon. Winds will be southwest 5 to 10 mph.
The National Weather Service says some spots in Lawrence could get as much as 3 to 4 inches of rain by Saturday morning.
"The heaviest rainfall is expected for overnight," Schack said.
As the heavy rainfall ends Saturday morning, Lawrence increases its chance for strong thunderstorms, she said.
Saturday's morning low will be 54 degrees, with Saturday's high reaching 59 degrees, Schack said.
By midnight Saturday, the chance for rain drops to under 50 percent, she said. Sunday's morning low will be 52 degrees. Sunday's high temperature will climb to 60, she said.
