A line of thunderstorms pushed through northeast Kansas overnight and this morning, bringing heavy rains, especially in the northwest part of Douglas County, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

"We picked up over 3 inches of rain (in Lawrence), " Schack said.

Trailing the cold front that moved in Thursday evening, the thunderstorms rumbled into Lawrence about 1 a.m. By 1 p.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport had already received 3.59 inches of rain.

The heavy rains were the apparent cause of an underground gasoline storage tank to well up out of the ground and break through the pavement by 8 a.m. at the Miller Mart station at West Sixth Street and Frontier Road. (See story, photos.)

By 8 a.m. In Douglas County, rainfall ranged from less than 1 inch near Baldwin in southern Douglas County to a high of 6 inches on the northwest corner of the county near Perry, Schack said

"I do think it eventually comes to an end this afternoon," Schack said. The National Weather Service says there's a 20 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms today.

At 1 p.m., Lawrence's temperature was 67 degrees, with a 93 percent humidity. Today's high is expected to reach 71 by late this afternoon, Schack said. Winds will be from the northeast at 8 to 15 mph.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to a low of 59 degrees by Saturday morning. Saturday's high will be 86 degrees, she said.

Another round of thunderstorms could roll through on Sunday, Schack said.

The NationalWeather Service says there's a 30 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms.

Sunday's morning low will be 63 degrees, with the high climbing to 76 by Sunday afternoon.
