Art a la Carte

Friday, September 23, 2005

The Lawrence Community Theatre opens it season tonight with a romp through the musicals of Broadway great Jerry Herman. A cast that originally called for four has expanded to eight under the direction of Terrance McKerrs. The actresses will sing and dance through such favorites as "It Takes a Woman" and "Milk and Honey." The curtain goes up on "Jerry's Girls" tonight at 8, and the show continues weekends through October 9.

In downtown Lawrence, the Hobbs Taylor Lofts get broken in this weekend with their first public event. The Lawrence Own-Your-Own art show opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the new building. This is the fifth year for the show, which sells work by Lawrence artists at a range of prices, with 5 percent of proceeds going to Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. The work remains on display through Oct. 2.

And the Spencer Museum of Art is getting to work this fall. In conjunction with an exhibition of black-and-white photography of working Americans shot by Lee Friedlander, the museum has planned lectures, tours, a student exhibition and live demonstrations by Lawrence workers on the museum lawn. In the Central Court, a video installation called "Feeding Lawrence" has even replaced several 18th century paintings. The programs began in earnest today and run through Dec. 11.
