Screen Scene

Unlike myself, Dave Spritz is at his best when working in front of a green screen. In "The Weather Man," Nicolas Cage portrays Spritz, a Chicago TV forecaster desperately trying to relate to his bitter ex-wife, listless daughter, troubled son and stern father in this dark, moody comedy.

Also opening in area theaters this week are two sequels to semi-recent hits."The Legend of Zorro" reunites Antonio Banderas as the suave swordsman and Catherine Zeta-Jones as his saucy lady love, who must again battle evil oppressors.

The Jigsaw killer returns in "Saw II," in which the sadistic madman traps some unlucky souls in a booby-trapped shelter, compelling them to find a way out before they inhale too much of a lethal nerve gas.

On a peppier note comes "Prime." Uma Thurman portrays a divorced woman who becomes involved with a younger man who happens to be the son of her therapist, played by Meryl Streep.

And "Prime" should not be confused with "Proof," an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning whodunit starring Gwyneth Paltrow as the daughter of a great mathematician, who she takes care of when he starts to lose his mind.

Reporting from in front of the green screen, I'm Jon Niccum with Screen Scene.
