Governor returns from Thanksgiving trip to Middle East

Tuesday, November 29, 2005

— After visiting Kansas troops in the Middle East over the Thanksgiving holiday, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius returned with a pocketful of personal notes to deliver to family members and expressed admiration for the job that the soldiers’ were doing.

“I am so proud of their efforts,” Sebelius said today.

It was a whirlwind trip with three other governors, covering six countries in six days.

Sebelius could see and hear gunfire in Baghdad, watched a security detail working out of one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces, and met with Kansas National Guard units carrying out a wide range of missions.

“It was a great opportunity on behalf of families and on behalf of all the citizens of the state to say `thank you,’” to the troops, Sebelius said.

Several spouses of soldiers in the Middle East heard Sebelius’ report and thanked her for going on the trip.

She served turkey to hundreds of soldiers and met with top brass and privates.

Sleep-deprived, Sebelius said she thought she was hallucinating when she saw a Jayhawk flag. When she looked at it, a soldier said, “Rock Chalk, mam”

Sebelius also said she saw Lt. Col. Lee Tafanelli, a former state legislator from Ozawkie, who commands the Kansas-based 891st Engineer Battalion and is scheduled to return home in several weeks.
