Cold, winter-like day ahead

Temperature to reach high of only 36 degrees

Tuesday, November 29, 2005

Below-freezing temperatures and a dusting of snow are giving Lawrence an early taste of winter today.

"Make sure you bundle up. The wind chill is only 11 degrees," said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Schack said Lawrence might see a few more snow flurries this morning, but most of the light snow the area has been getting since Monday is over, leaving behind gray overcast skies.

"We didn't see a lot of snow yesterday, only a dusting," she said.

However, the snow/rain drizzle, combined with temperatures falling below the freezing mark, caused slick streets Monday. The hazardous road conditions led to 57 traffic accidents between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to Lawrence police.

At 7:15 a.m. today, the temperature was 27 degrees, the humidity was 68 percent and winds were from the west-northwest at 21 mph. Skies were overcast.

"We should see that sunshine return about the noon hour," Schack said. "But the temperatures stay cold. . . Temperatures will be staying below average through the weekend."

Today's high will reach only 36 degrees by late afternoon, she said. Winds will be from the northwest at 12 to 20 mph. The average high for this date is 47 degrees and the average low is 27 degrees.

"Winds will become light tonight," Schack said. Skies will begin to clear overnight, she said.

Wednesday's morning low will be 19 degrees, with the high climbing to 45 degrees by Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday's skies will be partly cloudy through the day.

Thursday's morning low will start at 24 degrees and climb to a high of 36 degrees by Thursday afternoon. Skies will be partly cloudy Thursday morning, then clearing Thursday afternoon.
