Billowy gray clouds furrowed across this morning's skies. But the clouds won't bring rain on the first official day of summer vacation for Lawrence's school children.
"We're not too concerned about getting wet for the morning hours," said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. Most of the showers this morning were to the north of the Lawrence area, Schack said.
"Conditions improve as we go through the day. We should be bringing back some sunshine," she said.
At 8 a.m., the temperature was 63 degrees, with southeasterly winds at 7 mph and mid-level and high-level clouds. The clouds will thin out by the afternoon with the high temperature reaching 79 degrees, with east to southeast winds 5 to 12 mph, she said. The average high for this date is 78.
Another cold front moves in this evening, but most of the thunderstorms will stay out of the Lawrence area, she said.
"We do have an isolated chance for a thunderstorm before midnight," Schack said. The National Weather Service says there's a 30 percent chance of rain, mainly before 1 a.m.
Overnight, the low will drop to 55 by early Thursday morning.
"It looks like a great day tomorrow," Schack said. Thursday's high temperature will reach 75 degrees and northwest winds, 7 to 15 mph.
Friday's morning low will be 53, with the high climbing to 78 by late Friday afternoon.
