Two Kansas Supreme Court nominees from Lawrence

Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Two of three nominees to be the next Kansas Supreme Court justice are from Douglas County.

The names of Martha J. Coffman, a rural Lawrence resident who works for the Kansas Corporation Commission in Topeka, and Douglas County District Judge Robert Fairchild have been forwarded to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for consideration.

A nine-member nomination commission announced Monday that it had whittled its list of 13 applicants to three nominees. Also nominated was Shawnee County District Judge Eric Rosen.

Sebelius now has 60 days to appoint a replacement for Justice Robert Gernon who died March 30. Gernon was a Lawrence resident.
