One of my favorite sports movies ever is the 1976 comedy "Bad News Bears," a perfect marriage of humor and social commentary. Naturally, Hollywood is trying to reclaim that magic with a summer remake. Billy Bob Thornton takes the lead this time around as the slovenly manager of a Little League team of misfits who become unlikely contenders with the addition of a girl pitcher.
Also opening this week is "The Devil's Rejects," rocker-director Rob Zombie's ode to 1970s slasher movies about the vicious Firefly family who goes on a killing spree while running from the law.
A different style of journey is documented in "March of the Penguins." The French film records the tortuous migration of emperor penguins in Antarctica, who must trek 70 miles inland to find a patch of ice stable enough to mate and raise their chicks.
And finally there is Michael Bay's latest blockbuster "The Island." Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson star as residents of a seemingly utopian facility who learn they are clones whose only function is to provide spare parts for their original human counterparts.
