If your body can stand the cold, there are a string of art exhibitions opening tonight that glorify the human form. "Figures: Paintings and Drawings," a show featuring 10 area artists who have made their reputations depicting the figure, inspired the theme for the Downtown Friday Gallery Walk. The self-guided tour of Lawrence art venues runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Several other galleries on the walk, including Fields, Silver Works and More, the Olive and Signs of Life also will feature figurative work.
And Sunday at Kansas University's Art and Design Gallery, the school's art faculty mount their annual exhibition. The show includes paintings, drawings, prints, installations and sculptures. Among those featured will be longtime professor Peter Thompson, who is finishing his last year of teaching, as well as two noted national artists who already have retired: Robert Sudlow and Roger Shimomura. An opening reception will be from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the gallery. The show remains on view through Feb. 11.
