Restaurant owner files for city commission

Tuesday, January 25, 2005

A Lawrence restaurant owner has become the sixth candidate for the Lawrence City Commission.

Doug Holiday, a co-owner of Bigg's Bar & Grill, filed for one of three at-large seats on the commission this morning.

The deadline for candidates to file for the positions is noon today. Holiday's filing brings the city one step closer to having a primary election. If seven or more candidates file, there will be a primary election on March 1. The general election will be April 5.

Holiday, 42, said he hoped to bring a "fresh set of ears" to city government, and would talk about the need for the community to add more jobs.

"When I advertise for a position at the restaurant, I have 30 or 40 people apply," Holiday said. "That really tells me that we need to focus on bringing more jobs to the community."

Holiday also said he would like the City Commission to conduct more studies on the smoking ban that was implemented in July. He stopped short of saying that he would advocate for the ban to be overturned.

Holiday, who formerly was the general manager at Lawrence's Hereford House, is a current member of the board of directors of the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau and past member of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce's board of directors. He's lived in Lawrence since 2000.
