Snow flurries today, but warmer Tuesday

Monday, January 17, 2005

An arctic high pressure system that's had Lawrence in a deep freeze for several days will soon be gone.

"The good news is that warmer weather is on the way," said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. "We should be warming quite nicely into the mid and lower 40s by the time we hit the end of the week."

About 12:20 this afternoon, the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 24, with an easterly 10-mph wind making the wind chill 14 degrees. The temperature was expected to top out at 27 today, Reith said.

There's a chance for snow flurries this afternoon and a better chance of flurries tonight, he said. Skies will be cloudy most of the day.

Tuesday's morning low will fall to 18, but temperatures will finally break above the freezing mark later Tuesday.

"By the time we get to the afternoon, we'll have plenty of sunshine and the warm-up will begin," Reith said.

Tuesday's high will climb to 34, with southwesterly winds 10 to 15 mph helping to bring in some warmer weather, Reith said.

The temperature will drop off to a low of 18 by early Wednesday morning. Wednesday's high will climb to 38, which is a return to the average high for this time of year.

Temperatures will fall off Wednesday to a low of 22 by Thursday morning. Then Thursday's high climbs to 42. The highs on Friday through Sunday will be in the 40s, Reith said.

"We should be approaching 45 degrees by the time we hit the weekend," he said.
