A power outage struck the Kansas University campus and a nearby neighborhood this morning, leaving most buildings east of Naismith in the dark and office machines, including computers, inoperable. About 4,000 utility customers in the neighborhood between 9th and 19th streets and between West Campus and Schwarz also lost power, according to a Westar spokesperson.
People on campus said most buildings were emptying out with occupants headed for home or to grab something to eat.
It wasn't immediately clear when electricity would be restored.
A Westar spokesperson said the outage was caused by a squirrel in the transformer at the 19th Street substation and that workers were busy trying to switch an alternate power feed as soon as possible
KU is waiting to get a better sense of the problem before making any announcements about possible class cancellations, an official there said.
Update: Westar reports that the power was back on at 10:50 a.m. The power was out for an hour and ten minutes.
