School costs report delayed until Jan. 9

Friday, December 30, 2005

— The most anticipated report of the upcoming legislative session has been delayed again.

The school-cost study being conducted by the Legislative Division of Post Audit will be released Monday, Jan. 9, which is the first day of the 2006 legislative session.

The study was initially to be released Wednesday, Jan. 4, and then delayed to Friday, Jan. 6.

State Rep. John Edmonds, R-Great Bend, who is chair of the Legislative Post Audit Committee, said he was delaying the release until Jan. 9 because he didn’t see any sense in convening a committee meeting to release the study on Friday, and then having committee members return home and then come back to Topeka for the start of the session on Monday.

The report will focus on what it costs to provide an education in Kansas and how much it would cost to have a public school system that would give the state’s 450,000 students a chance at reaching a proficient academic level.

With school funding making up one-half of the state budget, the cost study is seen as one of the major factors of the legislative session.
