The Jones family was involved in an accident and was unable to recover their personal belongings — including some Christmas presents — that were in their car, which was towed. Cold weather is making life easier on car thieves. Lawrence Police say three cars have been stolen while the owners were simply warming up the vehicles. Two cars were stolen Monday; both were left running and unattended. A third car was stolen last month. Pull out the sleds, the snow shovels and the mukluks — the Lawrence area has close to eight inches of fluffy snow on the ground this morning, coupled with sub-freezing temperatures, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. "We're topping out only in the teens today. That arctic air is still in place," Schack said. "If you want to get out and do a sled ride today, make sure you bundle up."

A man currently serving time for a string of fires in Johnson County appeared in court Tuesday to face similar charges stemming from fires he allegedly set at Watson Library, Lawrence Dental Center and Clinton Parkway Nursery and Garden Store. Judge Paula Martin Tuesday resentenced two men convicted of statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl. Martin sentenced William Haney to prison for nearly seven years and Brian Ussery to more than five years. The Kansas Court of Appeals ruled that their original sentences were too lenient. The resentencing brought some relief to the victim's mother. "I'm satisfied with the new sentences," she said.
