Art a la Carte

Friday, August 26, 2005

Rodgers and Hammerstein. Irving Berlin. Stephen Sondheim. Are you whistling a happy tune yet? These guys penned some of the best-loved songs in the history of American musical theater. "I Have Dreamed," "Almost Like Being in Love" and "The Sweetest Sounds" will be among the ditties performed at "It Takes Two," a duet program sung by Kansas University graduate student Alicia Gian and University Theatre director John Staniunas. The show gets under way at 7:30 p.m. today at Swarthout Recital Hall.

Since her solo exhibition in August 2003 at Signs of Life, Lawrence painter Heather Smith Jones has gained a loyal, local following. She connects dichotomies by pairing abstraction with representation, text with imagery, color with whiteness of paper, and austerity with indulgence. She will show 27 new pieces in "Unfolding," which opens with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. today at the gallery and remains on view through Oct. 22.

And Saturday at Static Hair Salon, a quartet of Lawrence women designers will hawk their wares in an event dubbed "ecotone." Jewelry, textiles and other handcrafted works will be available, and 10 percent of proceeds will benefit the Wakarusa Group of the Sierra Club. The show is from 5 to 8 Saturday evening.
