Strong storms could erupt in afternoon
Thursday, August 25, 2005
If you're out driving this morning, watch out for sudden pools of water on area roads and highways.
"Today's main threat is heavy rain," said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. "We do have a flood watch in effect."
Schack said the National Weather Service has posted a flood watch for Douglas, Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Franklin counties. Leavenworth County was under a flash flood warning through 8:45 a.m. The Kansas City metro area was under a flood watch through 11 a.m.
"The rain does come to an end about the noon hour," Schack said. "There is a slight risk for severe weather here in northeast Kansas throughout the day today."
Lawrence had about 0.3 of an inch of rain by 7:30 a.m. At that time, the temperature was 71 degrees, the humidity was 93 percent and winds were calm at Lawrence Municipal Airport.
Most of the showers should leave the area by early afternoon, Schack said.
"Then we'll see just an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon," she said. "It will be a muggy walk home from school."
Today's high will top out at 84 degrees, with high humidity levels, she said.
"For the afternoon, we'll see a few breaks in the clouds," Schack said. "Then we'll see a new area of rain arrive for Friday. We could see a few strong storms erupting along the cold front."
Overnight, the temperature will fall to 70 by early Friday morning, she said. There's a 50 percent chance for strong storms on Friday during the day and in the evening, she said. Friday's high temperature will be 86 degrees.
"It looks like you can put the umbrellas away this weekend," Schack said.
Saturday 's morning low will be 68, with the high reaching 88 degrees Saturday afternoon, under partly cloudy skies.
