Light rain splashes Lawrence

Thursday, April 28, 2005

Lawrence residents had to dodge only a few raindrops this morning -- the bulk of the scattered showers that passed over the region bypassed the city, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

At 8:30 a.m., only a trace of rain had been measured at Lawrence Municipal Airport. Skies were cloudy, the temperature was 49 degrees and winds were northeast, dropping the wind chill to 43 degrees. The temperature won't get much warmer throughout the day, Schack said.

"You do want to grab a jacket on your way out this morning," she said.

Schack predicted the afternoon high will reach only 53 degrees today. The average high for this date is 71. Winds will be northeastly 10 to 20 mph.

"The clouds will continue not only for this morning, but throughout the day," Schack said. "I don't think we see any sunshine today or tomorrow."

The temperature will fall off overnight to a low of 42 by early Friday morning, she said.

"The next wave of precipitation arrives late tonight and moves in tomorrow," she said. She said the biggest threat for thunderstorms will stay off to the east.

The greatest chance for rain for the Lawrence area is on Friday morning, peaking out around noon, she said. Friday's high temperature will be 52 degrees.

Saturday's morning low will be 34, with sunshine breaking through Saturday afternoon, helping the high climb to 59 degrees.
