Cool, cloudy and windy conditions expected today

Friday, April 22, 2005

You might want to grab a jacket or a sweater on your way out -- Lawrence is expected to get strong gusty winds and brisk temperatures in the 50s and low 60s today.

"It's going to be cool and breezy as we go through the day," said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

However, unlike Thursday, the Lawrence area won't see any severe weather, Reith said.

Late Thursday afternoon, five homes were damaged by a tornado in Neosho County and there was a tornado spotted north of Kansas City International Airport. There was also a possible tornado south of Atchison.

Some areas in northeast Kansas reported large hail, including 2-inch diameter hail in Leavenworth County, and 1.75 inch hail in Wyandotte and Johnson counties, Reith said. The heavy storms bypassed Douglas County.

"We did see a few lingering rain showers this morning," Reith said. "There's no severe weather threat today. That has shifted off to the east."

At 8:30 a.m., Lawrence's temperature was 51, with winds out of the northwest 14 mph, making the wind chill 46 degrees. Winds will be northwesterly from 15 to 20 mph today, with some gusts reaching 35 mph around 4 p.m., Reith said.

"We top out around 62 degrees," he said. "We will see overcast skies through most of the day."

Tonight's temperatures will plunge to a low of 37 degrees by Saturday morning, he said.

On Saturday, the northwesterly winds will die down to the 8- to 12-mph range, with sunny skies and continued cool conditions, Reith said. Saturday's high temperature will be 58 degrees.

Cool conditions continue on Sunday, with the early morning low dropping to 34 degrees. Reith said there are chances for some patches of isolated frost early Sunday morning in some areas.

"If you have some flowers out there, do be careful," he said.

The high temperature will climb to 64 degrees by Sunday afternoon.
