Kansas University's men's basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll released Thursday.
"Certainly our players will be excited of the ranking but they also understand it is undeserved because this team, along with others, has yet to play a game," KU head coach Bill Self said.
"We need to start practicing better if we have any chance to play like a team that deserves to be ranked that high in the preseason."
The only other time KU began at the top of the poll was the 1996-97 season. Other ranked Big 12 teams are No. 8 Oklahoma State and No. 15 Texas.
